Heron Story

image_pdfimage_print

I’ve been observing and photographing a pair of Great Blue Herons building a nest near Lake Katherine.  This morning, a rival Heron flew in and appeared to woo one of the nesting herons away and perhaps steal the partner.  To be continued………..

The rival heron flew around the trees several times, finally landing in a tree adjacent to where two herons already stood.

On the left, the rival heron, appears to invade the territory of the two who’ve already worked to build a nest (right).

Below, the heron that had helped build the nest, prepared to depart.

The departure

The departed heron returned, right, only to find the rival (left) had moved in closer.

A challenge ensued…where both herons appeared to fight for dominance.

The rival, sensing he’s not welcome, departed, but came back shortly with a branch. Will it build a new nest and steal the heron from its mate?
