2019 Photos of the Year

2019 Photos of the Year
Each year, as we say goodbye to one year and look forward to another, news organizations (and other groups) publish a list of news photos they have chosen to be the “best” from the previous year. In my media literacy workshops,  I always include a photograph from the news/current events to engage teachers/students in “critical viewing” skills.  I invite you to consider using any one of the organizations listed below to engage your students in “visual literacy.”

Teachers: download a photo for each student, or groups of students. Omit the caption. Challenge them to conduct a “close read.” What can they infer from just what they observe?  What do they know?  What do they not know? What would they like to know?

Click on any of the logos below to go to that organization’s selections.  Find more advice for helping students “close read” images here. (Postings below are in approximate chronological order of their publication dates.)
