Each year, as the year nears an end, news organizations and others, post their selections for “photos of the year” from the year about to end.
Educators could engage students by having them select one (or more) of the images and conduct research into the background of the image.
Visual & media literacy questions your students could consider:
What makes a particular image “the best”?
Why did this organization choose this image?
What criteria did they use to determine “the best”?
Are there other images, from the year that’s just ended, that did not make the cut, and why?
Students could compare-and-contrast selections from US-based companies versus those groups that are not US-based.
Educators can use these images to teach both “visual literacy” as well as “how to close read an image.”
