(dictionary.com)

the study of signs and sign systems. This includes the investigation of apprehension, prediction and meaning:
how it is that we develop meaning, make predictions, and apprehend the world.
General theories of signs are called semiotics. (wikipedia.org)

The key points of Semiotic Analysis are:

  • “Focuses on the social and cultural meaning of signs and codes” ;
  • “Signs consist of an image, a word, an object, or even a certain type of practice.” ;
  • “The meaning of signs depends on the relationships between the signifier (the image, word, object, or practice),
    the signified (the implied meaning), and the referent (what the image, word, object, or practice refers to).” ;
  • Codes are the meanings of interpreting signs held in the context of society.  (Source)
